A bacterial worksheet, also known as a data sheet, is a document that outlines the most important characteristics of bacteria. This document is used in microbiology labs, medical research and clinical settings to help scientists, doctors and nurses know how to deal with a certain type of bacteria. The standard format is a series of rows and columns that describes characteristics of the bacteria in question. The primary purpose of this format is to make it easier for people to remember and use.
The first column is usually blank, as it describes what characters describe the bacteria. Then there are characterizations that can be made from the first character in the row. For example, if a cell line appears at the beginning of the row, that character would describe what cell line the bacteria are growing on. Some other characters also appear at the beginning of the row and they all describe characteristics of the bacteria.
After the character, there is a colon that describes what the name of the bacteria is. After the colon is the abbreviated name of the bacteria, as well as its common names or scientific names. Next, there is the number that is found at the end of the character.
The next character is used to describe what type of properties the bacteria characterizes. If a letter appears in the middle of the row, that letter describes what character appears at the end of the row. Some characters that describe these properties include: not, positive, negative, lipids, cell, the spore form, cell wall, etc. Finally, the word used for any information about the species of the bacteria is used at the end of the character.
Finally, the third character describes what the organism looks like. This can be described as either a circle, a line, a square or a hexagon. This is followed by the description of the bacteria in question, as well as a number that are provided for the genus or species. If a letter is used, the letter is also used to describe the genus or species name.
Next is the statement about the organism’s origin. If the origin is unknown, then the statement says so. Finally, there is the column that gives the strain number, which is used to determine which strain of the bacteria is being described.
If the bacteria is being described, the next character usually describes the method that the researcher used to obtain the bacteria. For example, if a cell line is used to acquire the bacteria, this is what the character says. Another characteristic is how long the researcher has been working with the bacteria, whether he or she has developed the culture properly and whether or not the cells have developed resistance to antibiotics. These characteristics may also be stated on another sheet of paper that is located after the first characteristics of bacteria worksheet.
Once all of the characteristics of bacteria are listed, it is usually necessary to insert a comment regarding them. This comment can be a piece of advice or it can be a descriptive phrase. The format for the comment is either a bold face or an italicized character.
