Recently, a well-known Bill Nye The Science Guy video was released showing a young child’s science fair project; the creation of his very own Bill Nye Food Web Worksheet. The video was featured in The New York Times, which then turned into a national news story.
This science fair project was conducted by Isabel Bernard and Tania Pae. Isabel and Tania were the winners of the Second Annual Create Science Fair Competition held at the South Point in Las Vegas. Their project was a research on the causes of severe childhood acne.
The two women presented a diet diary to their teachers as part of their research. They requested permission to perform an informal interview with three of the children who took part in the study. In this section of the video, the children are shown answering questions about diet and health. They were asked to provide details such as what they ate each day, when they ate it, how much, and how often.
Isabel and Tania then built a tool that allowed the students to type in their data and then use the Food Web Worksheet to analyze and share their findings. It was a neat tool and resulted in an innovative project that could have been done by anyone.
A professional designer by the name of Bernstein created the first Food Web Worksheet, but this was a limited piece of software. It only allowed you to use a hyperlink to click a link to the “data” section of the Web page. It did not allow you to input your own information. After Isabel and Tania’s competition, however, Bernstein released a version that allows you to do exactly what Isabel and Tania wanted.
Bernstein does not design this software, it is made available for free by organizations like Create Space to be used by teachers who wish to help kids.
