Transformations in Psychological Science are being written about a lot these days. Many of the articles that I see focus on their emotional effects on patients and, to some extent, others involved in the treatment. The topic of writing about them and how they work with the writing process is an important one.
For all the articles I see on transformational psychology, the idea that a transformation practice worksheet could be a valid way to help your clients. Transformation practice worksheets can help you in two ways. They can help you identify and document key components of transformational processes as they are occurring in a patient and they can help you document changes in a patient’s behavior.
A transformation worksheet can also help you change a patient’s behavior through your own skill. Most of us have a certain level of skill at relating to people. A transformation worksheet can provide a means for you to move beyond that level. If you have a skill at connecting with the transformative process that is occurring, your transformation practice worksheet can enable you to further intensify your connection to a transformational process.
So, what is a transformation practice worksheet? It is a document that includes lists of the keys that relate to a process of transformation. Some common keys for transformation processes include letting go, expanding, controlling, seeing more clearly, accepting newness, growing together, moving closer together, feeling in each other’s arms, seeing ourselves differently, playing with energy, getting out of this experience and so on. In some transformational processes there is no key that corresponds to a particular aspect of transformation, and you may find yourself simply using a phrase that does not refer to a key but, rather, to a quality that supports the process.
When you use a transformational practice worksheet, you can help to document those keys. You can have someone else write the words down for you. Or, you can write the words yourself and then explain them to the person who is writing the worksheet. It is a good idea to have a series of worksheets so that you can refer back to the keys when you want to work with a client. These sheets can also be handy for others who are going through a process as well.
The process of transforming a relationship is important, but many transformation practice worksheets don’t discuss the act of changing. Often the act of transforming someone involves taking on the other person’s feelings, desires and behaviors. This often requires us to become the other person. The ability to embody your own feelings, desires and behaviors without becoming the other person can be part of a transformation process.
The process can also involve practicing these same skills on a client. The client can become the other person and you can practice the act of taking on that person’s feelings, desires and behaviors. This means that you can practice the act of “becoming” the other person as part of your own transformation process. You may even want to create some kind of practice tool that lets you take on the role of the other person. Again, it’s important to remember that the act of “becoming” will take place when you are practicing it.
A transformational process doesn’t have to be more difficult or complicated than other forms of psychotherapy. It can involve the same techniques that work for other kinds of psychotherapy. If you plan on taking on a client who has transformed and whose behavior supports a transformational process, you can help to document the key elements of the process and then use the technique of transformation practice worksheets to help you communicate with that client.
