Bill Nye the Science Guy, aka Bill Nye the National Lampoon’s character, has produced a brilliant, witty, and entertaining television series that has given us some important environmental education. After being exposed to his original show, I have been more informed about how I can help my community to make a difference and what is needed to make our government work for us.
In one episode of the show he interviewed Dr. Bill Phillips, Wyoming State Director for the Wilderness Society about how we can help conserve resources in Wyoming. Here is the answer to the original question:
“What Bill Nye Pollution Solutions Worksheet Answers” by Jessica Blaney-DeBakey is the book written by Dr. Phillips. It contains an entire section about “Better Business Standards” and is a good reference. Here are some of the answers that he gave to the pollution questions:
The American Academy of Pediatrics recently released a report titled “Accelerating Research on the Health Effects of Ozone Depletion”. I personally believe that ozone depletion is an issue worthy of more study, but Dr. Phillips went into more depth to give an answer. His answer was this:
“Yes, it is caused by a chemical reaction between sunlight and nitrogen compounds that are produced by plants, which in turn, traps molecules that trap free chlorine in the ozone layer, one of the main causes of skin cancer.” His opinion and research are still in great need, as more research is being done about the ozone layer.
The American Academy of Family Physicians recently stated that our economic model is not working and that when it does not work, the consequences are felt in every area of our lives – including “reducing American ozone layer”. Their reasoning for this concern is the possibility of cancer, as the children exposed to the damaging ozone will be more likely to develop leukemia. He also stated, “Ozone depletion is part of the natural cycle of our planet, but as it gets worse, people should think of more drastic measures”.
“Two of the most effective ways to reduce emissions of greenhouse gases are the regulation of automobiles and the establishment of emissions standards for homes and buildings”, and “A well-constructed residential building can take up a lot less carbon than an automobile, while still offering the same house features”. He also stated that the best way to reduce the amount of carbon in the atmosphere is by planting trees.
Dr. Phillips’ book has several sources of information that were not discussed in this article, which I encourage you to visit. Even though the curriculum may differ, the concepts and importance are the same as those presented in this article.
