What is the Carolina Charter of 1663? The Carolina Charter of 1663 is a charter from King Charles II. It was issued to Sir George Carteret, son of Sir John Carteret and a Goldsmith who worked for Thomas Kensington.

This was his first marriage and his second child. His second wife was Sophia de Belleville, who was one of the most powerful women in Europe. She was also known as the mistress of King James I of England.

Sir George died young of an unspecified illness and was succeeded by his younger brother, Sir John Carteret. He left a large estate and a succession of children and grand-children, not forgetting his eldest son.
