Many students have asked me about the lengths of the hypotenuses, which is exactly what this worksheet is for. The right side of the triangle has its hypotenuse length, or its distance from the lower angle, written on it. Then you make the right side of the triangle equal to the length of the left side of the triangle.
Since we’re solving a right triangle with the hypotenuse already measured on the left side, you may need to use either or both of the two points to measure the hypotenuse length of the right side. For example, if you measure the hypotenuse from the vertex on the upper angle (the one nearest the top) you will be measuring the hypotenuse from the vertex that is the same as the left vertex.
In some cases, you may need to use the point where the hypotenuse meets the base. In other words, if you’re just measuring the hypotenuse’s length and you want to find the hypotenuse length of the other side of the triangle, you will need to use the base vertex to find the hypotenuse.
The main problem with the triangle above is that it does not have any equal sides, so the problems become impossible to solve. This worksheet is designed to give you the needed help.
There are other problems that are hard to solve, because we don’t really understand the shape of the triangle. For example, we know that the right triangle has only two equal sides, but how can we figure out the hypotenuse length of the left triangle? The answer is that we’re going to need a short worksheet.
Also, you should be able to figure out the number of sides of the right triangle has. That is, we can see that it has a right triangle side with three equal sides, but then there must be a third side that has two unequal sides.
The triangle in the last problem might seem like it’s missing a leg. After all, we know the hypotenuse has a length of three, but that it has two unequal sides. We also know that the triangle is in a “D” position, so it must have two unequal sides that are unequal to each other.
