We need to take a look at what power does first. Power is simply the force or the rate at which something moves. It doesn’t matter how it moves, whether that move is the kind that we can feel, or it is something that we don’t have a lot of control over, like the acceleration of a vehicle. For instance, a car moving at 100 miles per hour has the same force that would be generated by a person stepping back from their computer and moving their hand ten inches in a clockwise direction.
The power is the same whether you are using it in a mechanical sense or an electrical sense. To use a different example, take a look at what happens when electricity is used to turn a dial. That is a mechanical movement and the movement is regulated by magnets, and that is what we are used to seeing as the effects of electricity on a machine or object.
It doesn’t matter how the energy is used either, whether it is hot air blown into a room from a blower, or electricity sent from a wall socket. The same result will be achieved, whether it is done from a hardwired connection, or by getting the machine to communicate with some other device.
How much power is needed will determine the answer to the next question. A typical household uses between two hundred and two thousand watts of electricity per day. If we take an average home, that would be approximately one hundred kilowatts. It takes about two watts of power to do the kind of work that our computers are doing right now.
Power is not just measured in watts. There are electric motors for wind turbines and there are electric generators to supply electricity for a whole city. While calculators may seem like the most obvious option to use to answer the question of how much power is needed, there are others that are more advanced than calculators that can answer the question by looking at everything from the state of the grid and what could happen if a transmission line was to fail.
It doesn’t matter what kind of power you are working with. What matters is that you know what the power is and how much it is. This worksheet is the one place where you can use all of that knowledge to answer a simple question.
