Burleigh was famous for writing several works on various subjects including, Edmund Burke, the American Revolution, and Peter Burleigh. When Burleigh wrote his works, he presented the opinions of the noted British conservative on the issues in America. Those that opposed slavery hoped to allow free people to own slaves. This would end their state’s status as a “slave-holding” territory. When the British took over the colonies, many of the states gave up their slavery laws and abolished slavery.

Peter Burleigh supported slavery for whites and denied that the slaves had any rights. He believed that anyone could be a slave but not everyone can be free. Burleigh believed that those who owned slaves did so with ill intent. He argued that the states that allowed slavery were being greedy. In most cases, those that supported the slavery laws were rich white men.

Burleigh was known for making a fool of himself in public. Much of his work was published in journals. Burleigh was not popular at all with his fellow students. When he was asked what he thought about the revolution, he said he was glad they made it. He believed the Virginia and Massachusetts delegates were a disgrace.

Burleigh went on to work as a lawyer. At some point, he left his law practice and went into politics. Burleigh ran for governor of Massachusetts, and even though he lost his bid for office, he wrote a whole book about his campaign.
