The Constitution of the United States of America is an interesting document. It contains many sections that are in conflict with each other. There are times when it seems as if there are only three things that matter; religion, the flag, and the economy. For some, this is an unfortunate set of circumstances.
If we look at what the Constitution actually says, we will find out that this is not the case. In fact, there are times when the laws and the courts seem to disregard one section of the Constitution while upholding another. The Constitution is a document that was written in order to give the individual states, its citizens and the government a sense of unity.
When we consider that it was drafted over a period of time, it is also important to consider the reason for writing it in the first place. This reason should be considered when trying to come up with an answer to the question, “Does the Constitution work?” It should be noted that when people attempt to create checks and balances through the use of sections and amendments, they may not always be correct.
The American Citizen is given two main sections by the Constitution. It is the individual rights and it is the division of powers. For example, we would read the First Amendment to be the rights that a citizen can exercise free speech and freedom of religion; this is only one example of these rights.
The individual right is simply the right to do what you want. Freedom of speech is obviously on the same page. Both of these rights are part of what is known as “the individual right.”
Indivisibility is another important part of the Constitution. This means that there is no part of the document that can be altered without invalidating the entire document. If this is understood, it can help one to arrive at an answer to the question, “Does the Constitution work?” Indivisibility and divided powers are necessary parts of any governing body.
When the Republic was formed in 1789, it became apparent that the union would eventually break down if something was not done to address the divisions. The two major sections of the Constitution were soon divided and people began to argue about what should remain. We can see that this controversy took a toll on the states and the country itself, as well as the very people that elected the officials who are elected to represent the people.
If the Constitution is actually the best thing that has ever happened to the people of the United States, then perhaps we should take the time to really understand how it all works. By understanding the history of the document, we can see what its limitations are, and we can better understand why it is important. The Constitution can even be interpreted and understood as a whole instead of pieces of a puzzle.
