The first of these is the situation where a person is locked into a cell by their master with no option for escape, or for punishment if they ever get out. The second is the one where there are no work force and the only things that keep people from dying is food and shelter.

Legal slavery is the form of slavery where someone is locked up, beaten, or robbed and then returned to their master to die. Even though it is more difficult to prevent this form of slavery, the alternative, which is slavery without any kind of chains or restraint, is still possible.
