The situation worsened in the seventeenth century when the Protestant Reformation began. With the dissolution of the Roman Empire, many members of the Catholic Church felt that the Catholic Church had betrayed them. This led to the Protestant revolution that swept Europe. The followers of Jesus began to practice their faith openly and soon the world heard about Jesus Christ. The first Protestants were exiled from their homes and put in prison.

The Catholic Church was forced to allow some of its members to follow Jesus. As time passed, Protestants and Catholics became closer together and in the eighteenth century, the split between the Protestants and Catholics was so bad that it caused a civil war. It was at this time that the modern state of California was formed.

So, to accomplish this, a new Christian belief came into being called “Early Christianity”. It was a movement in which the believers understood that the teachings of Jesus Christ should be reflected in the church, the society, and even in the laws. It was based on what the apostles preached and it was accepted by the early Christians.

The ancient Romans adopted much of what was preached by Early Christianity. Since they already had a long history of worshiping gods and goddesses, it was inevitable that they would try to emulate the early Christians. Therefore, these Roman Catholics became known as Catholic.
